The Indonesian Association of Islamic Economists (IAEI) in collaboration with the University of Indonesia's Middle East and Islamic Studies Program, held an Indonesian Islamic Economist Workshop with the theme “Reflection on the Role of IAEI in National Economic Development”, on Thursday 15 May 2025 at Puri Agung, Grand Sahid Jaya, Jakarta. This activity is in the context of Reflection of Two Decades of the Establishment of IAEI and a series of agenda of the V Congress, which is not only a sacred forum for the organization but also an essential activity as a means of friendship between the board.

The cooperation of the Sarasehan repeats the moment of the establishment of IAEI in 2004 at the University of Indonesia as the initiator at that time was Mr. Mustafa Edwin Nasution together with KH Maruf Amin as Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Mr. Burhanuddin Abdullah as Governor of Bank Indonesia, Mr. Ahmad Subianto as BAZNAS, Mr. Riawan Amin as President Director of Bank Muamalat and Professor Dr. Halide from Hasanuddin University Makassar.  During the three decades of Islamic economic development and two decades of IAEI's work, its contribution to the national economy can be seen in the strengthening of policies, education, and innovation in Islamic finance. IAEI is a bridge between academics, regulators, and industry in encouraging a fair and inclusive economic system. Amid the challenges of digitalization and global dynamics, the Islamic economy still has a great opportunity to grow as a pillar of an equitable and sustainable national economy.

Until now based on data from the Global Islamic Economy Indicator version of The State of Global Islamic Economy Report 2023/2024 Indonesia is ranked third in the world after Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, the report Indonesia maintains from the halal food industry in second position, and the fashion and fashion industry in third position and the G20 presidential moment Indonesia formed The Halal 20 (H20) Forum which is an important milestone in the development and partnership of the global halal Industry ecosystem.

The Islamic banking sector passed 2024 well, amidst various challenging global and domestic dynamics. Starting from the increasing world geopolitical tension, fluctuations in the business and financial sectors. Islamic banking globally recorded in 2024 recorded the prospect of global Islamic banking assets reaching 2,580 billion US dollars or an increase of 8.82% on an annual basis and national Islamic banking is also able to grow well, in terms of assets, collection of third party funds, distribution of financing and service improvement.

Therefore, this forum is an important momentum to encourage innovation based on Islamic values that can provide real solutions to socio-economic problems and increase the competitiveness of the Sharia economy at the global level.

The Sarasehan agenda will be attended by the Chairman of the IAEI Advisory Board, Prof. Dr. (H.C.) K.H. Ma'ruf, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia and Chairperson of IAEI, Mrs. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Ph.D., Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Airlangga Hartarto, Governor of Bank Indonesia, Mr. Perry Warjiyo, Founder of the Association of Islamic Economists, Mr. Mustafa Edwin Nasution who will convey the point of view of the role of institutions and future directions and policies related to Islamic economics and finance guided by senior economist and Advisory Board of the Association of Islamic Economists Mrs. Aviliani.

This event will last until the evening in the form of Halal bi Halal between the Central Board of the Association of Islamic Economists with the Regional and Commissariat Committees, and continued the next day Muktamar V. This Congress is a strategic forum to strengthen friendship, synergize roles between stakeholders, and formulate concrete steps in strengthening the contribution of the national Sharia economy. This activity was also attended by IAEI DPP, DPW, and commissariat administrators throughout Indonesia, as well as academics, industry practitioners, and partners from various institutions.
